The Soviet Union, the power in the world throughout the mid 1900’s, finally began to fall in the late 1980’s. The Cold War was also nearing it’s end as the Soviet Union slowly began to fall. By 1989 the Soviet alliance system was about to collapse. As the military for the Soviets began to weaken they were unable to supply their allies with adequate military support. Because of this, the communist leaders of the Soviet allies began to lose power. By the end of 1989 the majority of the Soviets allies had revolutions within the country that often resulted in execution of the communist leader of that country. Also, the bonds within the Soviet Union were starting to fall apart. In February of 1990 the communist party was forced to give up a 73 year old monopoly on state power. With this and other occurrences within the country the people of the Soviet Union slowly began to regain some power and freedom. By 1991 a new party was formed within the Soviet Union called Russia.
Russia, the new party in the Soviet Union was slowly gaining favor from the people. The Soviet Union was on the brink of destruction. On December 21, 1991 the Commonwealth of Independent States was created. This is viewed by many as a successor entity to the Soviet Republic however according to Russia it’s creation was in place to create a “civilized divorce” from the Soviet Republic. On December 25, 1991, four days after the creation of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Soviet Union was declared officially dissolved. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union the Cold War finally came to a close. The Soviet Union ending was critical to the Cold War because with the fall of the Soviet Union the Cold War concluded.
