1990: Germany Reunited

From Gorbarchev’s reforms in the Soviet Union, Eastern German residents took refuge in the new border in Hungary. Some even escaping into western Germany wanting to find a home there. On accident, tens of thousand of East German citizens were let into the Western half from a misinterpreted speech from the west. This caused trouble in the West, and a new leader to be named in March of 1990.
West Germany, and East Germany finally reunited after being separated by the Berlin Wall for almost 30 years. The unification was finalized when Kohl was victorious over Gorbarchev in July. A Unification Treaty went into effect in September. It was not finalized until the 3rd of October, 1990. By December 1990, there was the first all german election since the Nazi’s were in control of Germany.
Even with the Unification finalized, they faced many challenges as a country. There was increased global competition, increased the complex welfare systems costs, and faced unemployment. The troubles they acquired were from the unification almost being unknown and surprising to people. Plus, Eastern Germany was in a bad economic state, far worse than what they expected. Their firms couldn’t handle the world wide trading, so hundreds of thousand lost jobs and became unemployed. To make matters worse for Germany, they couldn’t see any major growth because the country had to spend a lot of money repairing roads, railroads, and bridges. And lastly, the unification process was a burden because of the differences in the east and the west. The east disliked the western’s haughty attitude. The reunification of Germany was harder than they had expected. There is a lot more to running a country than just saying they are united. If they didn’t rush the unification, then the country would have been in a totally different economic state.
The Reunification of Germany in 1990 is significant to the Cold War because of the downfall of the Soviet Union lead to the unification. The decay of the Soviets struck fear into Eastern Germany and wanted them to unify with Western Germany. Plus, The Soviets were involved with Eastern Germany, and that didn’t work out. This can be connected to the Chinese rebellions because during both events, the people wanted different than what the government thought they did. Plus, communism, the government that was wanted to be changed during part of this event, and in the Soviet Union was a factor in all of what had been happening. Governmental Issues were a reoccurring issue in the Cold War era. It seemed that the people wanted change, and the government didn’t want that.
