It is seen as a fact that US had a direct impact in the destruction of Chile’s government in the Cold War. The United States destroyed Chile’s democracy by cutting off them economically. They did this first by making it so Chile couldn’t export copper so it crippled their economy. Then the United States cut Chile off from getting any international financing. After a while the US crippled Chile’s economy and made the citizens of Chile hate Allende and the way he was running his country.
A lot of this helped many of the United States corporation's, because the more Chile was in debt the more American corporation's made on the chilean mines. The Christian leaders in Chile was one of the mane reasons why the american corporations made so much money. A man named Harold Geneen who is the head of ITT. Harold asked the head of the CIA, John McCone if the CIA could help Perez with financial aid to take down Allende. The did this by making the money made by the American corporation made from chilean mines available to Perez. The financial help from the US made Perez able to win the election. Perez debts caught up with him after the election because of these debts Chiles national debt rose to the highest capita rate of any country. This made American country even more wealthy, and because of these massive debts Chiles government failed.
Connection
This is important to the cold war because it made American Corporations a lot of money. Which helped the United States Economy overall. So the US could have more money for their nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union.
