1950: Korean War begins

Overview

Up into June 25th 1950 the seriousness of the Cold War had not set in for those involved. This date represented the fist-armed conflict of the war. It had initially appeared that this war would be exclusively between North and South Korea. But the USSR and United States quickly took opposite sides in the war. The USA entered the war for a couple reasons; one being that China turned communist in 1949, and Truman realized that Stalin had entered the war purely to spread communism. So the USA entered to undermine communism, and to continue to fight for dominance in the world with the Soviet Union.

The separation of South Korea, and North Korea during the war.
The Significance of this war is seen in number of different ways. This war was a successful attempt by the United States to stop Stalin from spreading communism to other countries in Eastern Europe. Also this confrontation was the first time that the two countries could have an armed conflict without it being direct. The two countries also showed their hesitancy to use nuclear weapons. The USA stopped another Eastern country from becoming communist, and promoted capitalism through their actions in
war at the same time, all the while showing off the power of their military and government to the USSR.
