Soviets First Atomic Bomb: On August 29, 1949, the Soviet Union exploded its first atomic bomb.This surprised, and scared, the United States because they were unaware of the Soviets knowledge on nuclear weapons. The Soviet scientists built buildings, bridges, and other structures around the area of the bomb, to see how they would be effected. They also placed caged animals nearby. The bomb destroyed all the structures and killed the animals.
After: A few months later Klaus Fuchs was arrested for giving the nuclear secrets and information to the Soviets. Fuchs was the same physicist who had helped the U.S. build their first atomic bomb.
Connection: This took place during the Cold War. It was a way for them to advance their weapons.
